Feature: Sophie at the Costume Institute Galas

During her stint in the USA, Sophie became a regular at the annual Costume Institute Gala, also referred to as “The Met Ball”. This event takes place at the end of April/start of May in New York City, at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art. It marks the occasion of the opening of the Met’s fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute.

It is a ridiculously high profile affair, a sort of Oscars for the fashion world, and each year it has a theme. This means, the celebrities who have been invited to attend, may or may not try and dress in line with that “theme”. Sophie attended five of these on the trot, from 2003 to 2007 - which, coincidentally, covered a period between the release of her first novella and the release of it’s follow up, her debut novel “Playing With The Grown Ups”.

I thought it would be fun to show some images - together - from these five appearances, and there are other shots from all these dates elsewhere on this site. The image you see above is Sophie’s famous 2005 appearance, at the “Chanel” gala, wearing one of those “I’m sure it wasn’t see through when I tried it on indoors” dresses. Suffice to say, when she turned around, the paparazzi kept snapping, and you will find, if you try hard enough, shots taken from behind around the web!

This is the 2003 gala, known as the "Goddess" gala.

The 2004 event, "Dangerous Liasions".

The "Anglomania" gala, from 2006.

The 2007 one, the awkwardly titled "Poiret: King Of Fashion".
