You have found Sophie Dahl Rocks!

As the name suggests, this site is devoted to the coolest Supermodel/Actress/Novelist/Cookery Cutie alive today - and is even semi-endorsed by the woman herself.

The site has existed, in various styles, since 2003, and you are viewing what is more or less the third/fourth variant of the site. Originally built using a website builder program provided by Wanadoo/Freeserve, the buying out of these sites by Orange, who then offered a "payment" based website service has resulted in me rebuilding the site using Blogger to avoid it running at a severe loss - this means that you will sometimes see dates on screen, or in the menu pages, but it simply means that's when the pages were uploaded, and usually no more! But, crucially, it works well.

Pretty much anything and everything you wanted to know about Sophie is here somewhere - and the site is always expanding. When it was launched, the only Sophie sites that were running seemed to concentrate purely on magazine scans, so this site was launched to try and list the magazines, movies, books and everything else that had a Sophie involvement. Furthermore, it seems to be the only fan site on the net devoted to Sophie that is still up and running and being updated whenever it needs to be.

You are currently on the home page of the main part of the site, which is home to the "Sophie-ography". It appears in two parts - effectively, stuff from 1996 to 2010, the point at which Sophie more or less retired from full time modelling, and 2011 onwards. Scroll back up and click on the "2008" button to access the older material. You will then be able to view details about books, magazines, movies, music videos, and much more, from the "modelling" years. Scroll back up and click on the "2011" button, and you will get more of the same, but more or less covering the "novel writing and cookery" days. However, there is a bit of overlap throughout and I would suggest you have a look around, as there are a few bonus photos scattered around where you might not expect them! If at any point you are somewhere on the site, and want to find the 'other half', click on the "2008" or "2011" button dependent on where you are.

For a real view of just how much info is here, click on the arrow next to the "2008" button, then when it appears, click the arrow next to the "July" button, then click the arrow next to the "2011" button, then when it appears, click the arrow next to the "April" button - and that will show you all of the Sophie-ography pages in one go.

Remember, this is a fan site, so it may not be 100% accurate and 100% complete - even the news pages will sometimes be a bit "behind", but I will do my best to add news when it happens as well as updating the remainder of the site as and when. Many of the pictures used are believed to be in the public domain, but for any that might not, there are links throughout all the site to websites that contain the original photos (and more). Big thanks to Caroline Black and Ross Hardy, who have both been instrumental in helping with chunks of this site.

Sophie-ography Home Page 2!

This is the home page of the second part of the "Sophie-ography". Look to your right, and you will see various pages, detailing newspaper appearances, magazine appearances, and plenty of other bits and bobs, which roughly cover a period post-2010.

This, vaguely, was the point at which Sophie stopped modelling for proper, had a baby, and fully embraced writing and cooking instead. But that doesn't mean another "Vogue" shoot is ever likely to be out of the question!

As mentioned elsewhere, pre-2010 stuff is mostly to be found by clicking the "2008" button, and the Ad campaigns, Magazine covers, and Diary pages (most of which cover both pre AND post 2010), can be found by clicking the "2009" button.

This page will be used as a bit of an "overflow" from some of the other pages in the "Sophie-ography" or "The Diary". Blogger is a bit of a pain when it comes to amending already published pages, so I thought I would add any extra pictures here instead. I will also use it to publish extra pictures that I happen to like, for events already represented "visually" on those pages. There are 40+ images here, and it might get a bit bigger in future.

I would imagine most shots will come from the 1996-2011 period, as anything after that date will slot quite easily into the "Mag-ograhy" pages etc, such as the doodle above which was done for "National Doodle Day" in early 2011. The choices will probably be a bit random, but that will add to the fun!

Sophie Overseas

Having had a brief "sojourn" in the USA, and having appeared as a model in magazines worldwide, it comes as no surprise to announce that Sophie related items have appeared not just in the UK but overseas - where they way in which they are packaged differs. Look around the rest of this site and you will see various different editions of Sophie's books, in different covers, from different territories. And not just that, but sometimes, things appear overseas that you can't even get in the UK. Did you know you can get Sophie's cookery show on DVD in Australia? Just look at this:

[published on 1st September 2011. Very much a "follow up" to "Voluptuous Delights", similar in style and design. No dustcover though, but embossed title design on front just like (reissue of) predecessor. Mix of photos of Sophie and of the food, with anecdotes and stories. Reference made at one point to Mrs Beeton, subject of Sophie helmed TV show scheduled for broadcast several weeks after book release, plus reprint of one "Waitrose Magazine" story. Themed throughout, chapters devoted to Autumn, then Winter, and so on, with each chapter featuring recipes for Breakfast, Lunch and Supper. Overseas editions exist in countries such as Australia, in the same basic cover, but with slightly altered ISBN numbers, and at least one edition has appeared, after the original UK release, with a different cover, and a transalated title. Welcome to the Sophie-ography, a veritable feast of Sophie pictures and information, unrivalled anywhere else on the web. To the right, you will see various pages containing plenty of info about Sophie's books, Sophie's magazine appearances, and pretty much anything else Sophie related. The pages cover the period from 1996-2010/11, the point at which Sophie moved away from modelling. Pages from 2011 onwards can be accessed via the "2011" button.

Given that this is a fan site, this info is as complete as it can be, so apologies if you are aware of something that I am not - I do try my best to keep this site as up to date and full of gen as possible! These pages are constantly being added to and updated, so keep an eye out for anything "new". However, things that are more at home in the "present" can be found on the newer versions of these pages, so again, click on the "2011" button again to look at the new "stuff".

Feature: Sophie's Charitable Activities

Sophie has been involved in a variety of charity events since she started modelling, using her star status to help make an impact as regards to fund raising events. The image above, from 2011, shows Sophie modelling one of the TK Maxx/Vivienne Westwood/Comic Relief t-shirts for Red Nose Day.

In more recent years, Sophie's Catwalk work has become rarer - you are more likely to see her on the runway for charity, rather than for regular work. The picture above is Sophie on the catwalk in Dublin in 2002 - a charity fashion show which saw Supermodels and Tennis Stars share the limelight (the likes of Anna Kounikova were there for the start of the Collins Cup the following day). The show was in aid of the Chernobyl Childrens Project. The picture of Sophie in a field is from 1999, with Ms Dahl modelling a Hugo Boss designed dress sponsored by the McLaren Formula 1 Racing Team. An auction selling a limited number of these dresses took place that July. The bottom right picture shows Sophie modelling at a Unicef Fashion Show back in 1997.

Less strenuous charity work can come in the form of turning up for a charity film premiere or a charity gig - the picture below on this page is from Somerset House in London in 2002, where Sophie attended a charity concert by Sir Elton John - each guest paid an undisclosed sum in order to gain entry to the show. The show was in aid of the Absolute Return For Kids charity.

In 1999, she donated a set of 'Kiss Prints' to charity during National Breast Cancer Awareness month - a piece of A4 card with Sophie's lipstick marks on the card along with a signature through the middle of the 'decoration'. In 2003, she also designed a Teddy Bear sized T shirt for auction by the New Life Foundation - the shirt featured her signature across the middle of the shirt. Your webmaster owns both - and images can be seen below.

The above images are of Sophie's RSPCA funding charity T-shirt design from 2005, and the "one off" Anya Hindmarch charity bag - chances are if you are reading this, you probably don't own it! And whilst the image below may seem like a gratuitous FHM style picture, this photocall was in connection with a Breast Cancer fund raising initiative in 1997.

The picture above dates from late 2007, which saw Sophie involved in the "Dogmob" scheme where dog lovers could donate towards the Battersea Dogs Home and in return get wallpapers, screensavers and ringtones downloaded to their phone. And below is the original Xmas wrapping paper design Sophie did for the Katine fundraising project - where celebrities designed Christmas wrapping paper that was given free with "The Guardian Newspaper" in November/December 2008.

Sophie was also offered as a "date" at an auction at Woody's in West London in 2002 (with Mick Jagger the rumoured winner) - the price for an evening with Englands finest? £5000....

Feature: Memorabilia

As with any celebrity, there is a seemingly endless supply of Sophie memorabilia available. Elsewhere on this site, you can read (and see) details of magazines, DVDs and plenty more. On this page are details (and pictures) of some of the odder items. Exactly how many of these Ms Dahl is actually aware is open to question! Above, the H&M "Christmas" fold out poster advert that was tucked inside some UK glossy magazines several years ago.

Whilst many of Sophie's exhibition appearances tend to be, in the main, low-key, the 2002 Mario Testino exhibition was high profile enough to have it's own free guide given away at the event, detailing which pictures were where in the gallery (see above). There's no picture of Soph inside (you had to buy the £25+ book for that), but her name features.
There was a programme available for Sophie's run in the Vagina Monologues in London in 2001 - the basic programme featured a picture of the cast for the 14th February 1999 one-off special, including Sophie, whilst the programme carried an additional insert with the then-current cast. For Sophie's run, this insert also features another Sophie picture. Later editions of the programme issued once Sophie had finished her run included pictures of ex-cast members - as such, a picture of Sophie features in these. After the run at The Arts Theatre, the play later moved across London. A fold-out flyer advertising this run features pictures of previous participants - so Sophie is also inside this item.

Of course, depending on "high profile" certain events are, tickets for Sophie related events exist. Don't get your hopes up that any might have her picture on (or even her name) but they are nice items to have. Above is a ticket for the "15 Minutes" exhibition in London.

If you are lucky, you may get the odd chance to own some fairly unique items. Your webmaster owns the above, a pair of Sophie's old boots signed by the woman herself!

Glossy pictures are also available for sale. The one above shows Sophie at the "Goddess" gala in 2003. There are 5 or 6 'Paparazzi' pictures that can be found all over the net, including Amazon and Movie Market ( http://www.moviemarket.co.uk/ ). The Daily Mirror website (http://www.mirrorpix.com/ ), also has a selection of older pictures for sale - the photos are alledged to have all been printed in the UK newspaper "The Mirror", although this is questionable. In addition, glossy pictures are floating around thanks to other Photo Agencies like Associated Press or UK Press, whilst the Don Features website ( http://www.donfeatures.com/ ) also has Sophie pictures to view or buy. This website is run by "Hello" magazine's photographer, Dominic O'Neill and as such, only a selection of photos from mainly London-based events can be found here. In the past, The Sun and The Times newspaper websites offered picture sales from their sites, where a handful of Sophie pictures could be ordered as basic glossies, mousemats, mugs or even place mats! As ever, these websites are subject to change so some items (and indeed the websites themselves) may not be available as you read this.

Some of Sophie's more high profile ad campaigns have resulted in various collectible items, and her "Accessorize" and "Monsoon" campaigns generated several oddities - postcards, gift voucher cards, and carrier bags - various sizes exist with various pictures, and one is pictured above.
Sophie was also featured in the industry-only Elite Modelling Agency filofax from 2002 - the picture inside had featured in the 22nd March 2001 edition of "D" magazine, and hardcore collectors may need two versions - one which had several pages of other models duplicated, and the one which (apparently) didn't! Sophie's photo is unaffected in either version you will be pleased to know.
Sophie's Grattan Catalogue cover appearance in late 2003 also spawned some collectibles - the catalogue was sent to previous Grattans customers during December 2003, but wasn't available to order from their website until January 2004. People who ordered the catalogue also recieved an order form in a separate envelope - the envelope also included various other inserts, and several of these items featured a reprint of the cover shot - including an 'un-cropped' version of the picture. Unless you ordered something from the catalogue, you were supposed to return it to Grattan - but I guess there was nothing stopping people not returning it by 'forgetting where they had put it...'. Anybody who did order something received paperwork to confirm their order, complete with images of the catalogues' cover on much of the paraphernalia.

And what on earth is this? Well, it's a dressing table designed by Sophie for Habitat's 2007 "Very Important Products" childrens range - not a one off, but still worthy of mention!

Feature: Imitation Of Christ

When people think of fashion shows, they obviously think of models walking up and down a catwalk. Imitation Of Christ are designers for whom this is not the case.

The brainchild of Matthew Darnhave & Tara Subkoff, with actress Chloe Sevigny acting as creative director, Sophie has modelled for IOC on three occasions. Yet none of the shows were conventional catwalk shows, but were regarded to be more like 'performance art'.

For the Spring 2002 show, the models and journalists swapped places - Sophie and Co sat where the journalists and guests would normally be at the sides of the catwalk runway, and the journalists had to file past the models, rather than vice versa.

For the Fall 2002, the show was held at Sotheby's and the show was presented as if it was a genuine auction. A rotating stage displayed several models at a time who stood motionless whilst a description of the outfits was read out over the loudspeaker, before the stage turned to reveal the next set of models. The exception was the final designs, where the models appeared on the side of the room. Each guest was also given an Auction House style book listing each of the garments.

For the Spring 2003 show, the show was split into two - topless models pushing vacuum cleaners appeared on one floor, Sophie and the rest appearing on another. Chaos subsequently ensued, and such was the set up of the show, that photographs of some of the models were impossible to obtain. Sophie pictures from this event are very few and far between.

It remains to be seen if Sophie will model for IOC again - she did no catwalk shows for the New York autumn/winter 2003 collections, having reduced her catwalk work since 2002 to spend more time on acting and writing.

Sophie Dahl was born (as Sophie Holloway) in London on September 15th 1977, although numerous articles about her list her year of birth as 1979 by accident. Her father is the actor Julian Holloway, her mother is Tessa Dahl and her grandfather, the childrens author Roald Dahl. The character Sophie, in his book "The BFG" is based on her. She is the granddaughter of actor Stanley Holloway, and her grandmother is Oscar-winning actress Patricia Neal. Having initially settled in London once her modelling career took off, Sophie moved to New York several years ago, before returning to the UK, having always had a soft spot for London - her favourite hotel is Claridges.

If you have read any article on Sophie, you will be well aware of her being "discovered" crying on a London street by fashion designer Isabella Blow. Sophie signed to Storm Models in the UK, and set off on a modelling career. It was not Sophie's first brush with fame - she had appeared on Childrens TV when she was a youngster, along with Roald Dahl, who was being interviewed about his childrens books. Sophie's early catwalk duties were in London, where she was based, but from the very beginning, she was featured in magazines in Germany and Italy, and within a few years, had started to appear in magazine shoots worldwide.

Within a year or two of "becoming famous", Sophie was already beginning to diversify - the picture above right sees Sophie in character as Goldilocks for a stage play in 1997. In 1999, she made her big screen debut in "Mad Cows", having already appeared in several music videos during 1997 and 1998.

Sophie made waves in the modelling world by being one of the few "plus size" models both in fashion mags and on the catwalk, but this led to her being typecast as "Sophie Dahl, the fat model". When she lost weight, this led to cries of "sell out" from the fickle factions of the press, yet it allowed her to continue to diversify in the work she was being offered. Sophie later stated that her weight loss was through simply losing "puppy fat", and a second bout of attacks from the media followed a trip to India where she simply lost weight after catching a virus.

As her fame stretched worldwide, she relocated to the USA and she appeared in arguably the most famous and controversial ad campaign of all time, for Opium. A famous image of her reclining, nude, on a velvet drape was later voted one of the most "banned" adverts of all time, with reports of cars crashing as the drivers were distracted by the iconic image! Despite being "banned" from public displays, the advert appeared regularly in fashion magazines, making it her most memorable fashion shoot.

With writing quite obviously in her blood, Sophie decided to head down this avenue in 2002, and released her first novella, "The Man With The Dancing Eyes", in 2003. Her second book, a full length novel called "Playing With The Grown Ups", surfaced in 2007. By this point, she had filmed what to date remains her last movie, the rarely seen "Little Fugtive". Sophie later admitted she wasn't suited to being an actress, and decided that writing would now be her forte.

In recent years, Sophie has re-located back to the UK, and "semi retired" from modelling, although her links to fashion remain, with the likes of "Vogue" putting her on the cover when her second book was released. Her third book, in 2009, interestingly, saw her further her career in another direction - "Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights" was a cook book, and saw Sophie starting a new phase in her career as a taller Nigella Lawson! Despite the various attacks on her weight loss throughout the years, Sophie had in fact been a keen cook all her life, and the book listed her favourite recipes.

In 2010, to more or less coincide with the book, Sophie landed her own six part TV show on the BBC - "The Delicious Miss Dahl". It was filmed the previous year, and by the time it was broadcast, Miss Dahl had become Mrs Cullum - having married Jazz musician Jamie Cullum at the end of 2009. The couple had met at a charity event in March 2007, and although their wedding was not announced until January 2010, the couple had married in secret the previous December.

At the time of writing, Sophie's novel writing has gone on hold - with a second cookbook being released in 2011, and another BBC show, this time a one-off about Mrs Beeton. Sophie has continued to contribute non-food related articles to newspapers and magazines, having had a fragrance column in the UK edition of "Vogue" in recent times.

Sophie's Book Tour, 2007

After plans to do a 'book tour' for "Dancing Eyes" ended up with Sophie mostly conducting interviews and book signings, the tour for "Grown Ups" involved a series of discussions in addition to the above. The picture below is from a book signing in Dublin, midway through the tour.

On October 14th 2007, Sophie appeared at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, eight days before the book was officially released. The picture at the top of this page is of Sophie just after arriving at the event, taken at the same time that she told your webmaster how good this very website was.

The talk, with Esther Freud, consisted of the pair being asked questions about their new books by a 'compere', on the basis that both books had a similar theme. Sophie also read a passage from the book, and after 45 or so minutes of chat, the pair fielded questions from the audience. The only revelation I can remember is Sophie revealed at this point that she doesn't keep a diary!
After the talk was over, the pair retreated to a "signing area", where they had to contend with the rather popular Griff Rhys Jones doing a signing on an adjacent table, with both of Sophie's books available for purchase and signing. Nonetheless, a reasonable crowd turned out for our belle, whilst Jamie Cullum uncomfortably wandered around waiting for it all to end....

The next of Sophie's "on stage" appearances on the 2007 book tour was at the "Beyond Words" literature festival, held at the main campus (of three) of the University College School, in Hampstead, North London. The picture above shows Sophie before showtime just outside the hall where the festival was being held. As your webmaster approached, I was greeted with a "Hello Jason" - I was shocked that Sophie remembered me! One of those "once in a lifetime" moments...

Sophie had attended a school nearby, which may have been the reason she agreed to do this festival. In reality, it was a local festival, most people who attended the five day's worth of events were expected to be students and friends of the school. There were events throughout the day, but the evening events required a £10 entrance fee, donated to charity. Free wine and water was provided however! Sophie's appearance was the opening night. The event was billed as "Sophie Dahl and Justine Picardie in conversation", and like the Esther Freud event, both had new books out - in theory. However, Justine's book had been put back in the release schedules, so it became more of an interview, with Justine talking to Sophie about her book, with Sophie reading two passages from it during the course of the evening.

After 45 or so minutes, the audience were invited to ask questions. At first, it seemed that nobody was brave enough to speak, and Justine and Sophie were prepared to keep talking, but the questions soon came thick and fast, and eventually covered fashion, as well as the book. Sophie revealed she was not a fan of the weekly glossy mags such as "Grazia" and elaborated on her "no diary" shocker at Cheltenham by admitting that in her youth, she used to keep a diary consisting of other people's events! The talk, including questions, ended after an hour and a half, and as Sophie waltzed across the room to sign books for the crowd, I had recovered to ask her about whether or not she had appeared at the 2003 Fashion Rocks event, as she was rumoured to be appearing in the days leading up to the event, and a lookalike with black hair (or wig) did model for Matthew Williamson at the event. She never did attend, she confirmed before cheerily saying goodbye and heading off to meet her audience.

The book tour, technically, continued for many more months - involving TV interviews, the odd Xmas lights switch-on (the picture above is from one such event in Bond Street), and with the release of the the book in North America in 2008, more talks and signings (details are sketchy - my apologies) across the pond took place.

Feature: Autographs

When it comes to signing autographs, Sophie tends to have changed the way she signs over the years, as well as sometimes leaving different trademarks, especially when signing maybe two or more items at once. Some autograph collectors complain that the value of a particular persons' signature can be made worthless if they do this, although I can't see that this is entirely true. Maybe it depends on just how different the differences are - but as far as Sophie goes, some of her signatures have fetched good prices.

I have seen a myriad of Sophie autographs from over the years, and in this time have seen numerous variants, including the three types shown on this page - these three autographs were all listed for sale on Ebay at the end of 2003.

On these three examples, Sophie has 'signed off' in different ways - the top picture just has a standard signature, the middle picture has been finished with a full stop and the bottom picture has been finished with a dash. Whilst the differences between these are very subtle, there are other autographs in existence that vary quite significantly. There are a few where Sophie has signed off with a "heart" drawing, and others are signed as "Sophie Dahl x". And if she's feeling generous, you could get more than one kiss per signature.

You may, if you ask, get an autograph dedicated to you if you so wish, and perhaps a little message if you are VERY fortunate. Your webmaster got a "Happy Valentines Day" message inside his copy of "Dancing Eyes" at a book signing after plying her with gifts! Proof that bribery does pay...

If you're lucky, you may find a "Love Sophie" or a "Love Sophie Dahl", again followed by any manor of endings. I think there has also been at least one "Lots Of Love" offered for sale online. There is at least one signed "Love Sophie Dahl x ." in existence. And at least one signed "Love Sophie Dahl x" followed by a dash...as you can see, if you want to get picky about these things, it can get a tad confusing !

As for prices, Sophie's autograph varies dramatically depending on where you look and what has been signed. Auction items can often hit three figures, whilst an autograph on a blank white card or a signed Storm Models postcard can appear on sale for next to nothing. Unlike other celebs, Sophie is happy to sign things all the time and this tends to keep the price of her signatures down to a reasonable level, unlike somebody such as Bob Dylan or David Bowie whose rarity factor as regards autographs keeps their prices high.

[Ali G is the comic creation of Sacha Baron Cohen, who stars in his own TV show interviewing celebrities and public figures in a somewhat inept manner. On many occasions, the interviewees were under the impression that Ali and his show genuinely existed. The 'USAiii' series saw Ali and two other characters film their interviews in the USA in 2002. This DVD collects all the episodes from the series, episode 3 of which ended with one of the other characters, Bruno The Fashion Reporter, stopping Sophie backstage at a Matthew Williamson show in New York in September. It makes for slightly uneasy viewing! This picture shows Sophie earlier the same day, having her hair done backstage for an MRS fashion show.
Disc 1 includes the episode, and a short excerpt from the 'interview' also features on the 'Bruno' menu screen (there are other menu screens for Sacha's other two characters, both of which also offer the option of viewing this episode). Disc 2 has the DVD's extra features - nothing rare Sophie wise, although if you choose to view the trailers, another quick flash of the Sophie clip flashes up on screen. The CD Rom includes Sophie's 1999 picture, and some stunning on set footage of her, making this item a worthwhile purchase. One exception is one of the latter Imitation Of Christ shows that Sophie did, where for some reason she didn't get photographed. None of the videos have catalogue numbers, and videos come in die cut sleeves with the title of the video on the tape label. All are mail order only, and come in a single mailer whether or not one or more videos are ordered, complete with order information sheet inside.

In recent times, FirstView has become a password protected site, and although the site has some "free to view" photos, a quick scan recently suggested some of the older shows that Sophie did are simply not free to view anymore!

Now, even as a hardened record collector, I have never gone down the route of buying LPs where somebody I liked sang backing vocals on someone else's album. But, in the interest of "completeness", I felt I had to mention the fact that Sophie sings backing vocals on Jamie Cullum's 2009 record, "The Pursuit". Sophie sings on a song called "Mixtape", and the reason she appears is that Cullum once made her a mixtape - simple explanation!

On top of the numerous magazine appearances she has made, Sophie has seen her picture grace the newspapers on many occassions. The problem is, even though the pictures used are often exclusives as they are photos taken by paparazzi at film premieres or whilst she is out shopping, newspapers are more likely to be thrown away than sold on "Ebay", although the popularity of sets of cuttings sold on that site mean you may, by accident, be able to get some of these photos. The Spring/Summer 2003 "Southend Theatres" programme, detailing upcoming events in Southend-On-Sea, featured booking details for "The Vagina Monologues" due to visit the coastal resort as part of its national tour. The feature namechecked Sophie, and also featured a picture of her on stage during a London performance in 2001.

She was also interviewed for "ID" magazine, August 2003 issue, but the magazine features no Sophie pictures.

The 1999 "Supermodels Poster Book" features a pull out poster of Sophie taken during London Fashion Week in February 1997.

The December 1999 issue of "GQ" features a Sophie picture from the July 1997 edition, and also came with a free calender featuring Sophie's picture from the "Smile ID" book.

Special Copies of "In Style" magazine, dated April 2003 but different to the regular April edition, were given out at UK clothes store Oasis in March 2003 - a previously seen Sophie picture features in this freebie.

A picture of Sophie appeared in the first issue of "Fame!", from August 2003, a crossword magazine. All clues on her crossword were to do with fashion. The entire crossword was reprinted virtually identically in "Star" magazine on 7.2.2004, even using the same picture of Sophie and co!

A letter from Sophie was published in the "Evening Standard" on 16th December 2002, after a writer had claimed several days earlier that "Dancing Eyes" was based on Mick Jagger. The letter denied this claim - a quote from her response appeared with a picture of Sophie (taken at the premiere of "The Hours" in America) in both "Hot Stars" & "Hot Celebs" magazines soon after.

Sophie's ads for Pringles, Opium, DKNY, etc. have, in the main, not been listed on this site as they have been reprinted again and again in numerous magazines worldwide, but by default, may be in some of the magazines already listed where there are other Sophie pix.

Elsewhere on this site, I make mention of the "travel size" version of some magazines. This phenomenon, possibly restricted to the UK, stems from the days when US magazine "Glamour" launched in Britain - the publishers noted that a magazine that could easily fit into a ladies' handbag could be a bit of a seller, and thus "Glamour" was launched in a size significantly smaller than it's US counterpart (with other foreign versions also being published in this same size). Eventually, other magazines noted that the "travel size" edition of their own publications could prove popular, and several magazines started to issue editions in both "normal" and "travel" sizes. Who did, and who didn't, seemed to vary (Marie Claire did, Vogue didn't, and even some mens mags like "FHM" went down the travel size route - I assume the "Man Bag" started to become 'in vogue').

The first Sophie cover to be affected by this was her June 2009 "Red" cover, which was issued in both normal and travel sizes. Although to the untrained eye both covers were the same, there were some very minor differences - mainly, in the position of the text on the cover. The two editions are shown below, and you can click on the picture for a zoomed in version of each, so you can compare and contrast - the border around the second is to try and identify how much smaller the travel edition is - apologies for the clarity of the pictures when you zoom in, there are tedious technical reasons for this.

But it doesn't stop there - WHSmiths decided to issue "cheap" versions of both covers, retailing at £2.50 instead of £3.50. These editions came with their own custom built covers, with a big yellow circle identifying the price reduction. The circle partly obscured Sophie's picture, but not too badly. Again, normal size on the left, travel size on the right.

And there's more. In some sort of credit crunch busting attempt to sell more magazines, 'double pack' editions of several magazines have started to surface in recent years - often pariring magazines that you would not think possible. Sophie's "Red" cover was issued as such - the cover looks the same as the "full price" editions of the magazine, but with the barcode reaplaced by a white "Multipack - Do not sell separately" warning, and again, in both normal and travel sizes. They come shrinkwrapped, and to make matters worse - there are (at least) TWO different versions of the normal size:

a) a WHSmiths edition housing the mag with the then current issue of "Psychologies", which coincidentally, also included a feature on Sophie

b) a Tescos edition (also sold in WHSmiths...) housing the mag with the then current issue of "Elle" - again, also featuring Sophie somewhat incredibly

The travel size edition housed the "Psychologies" mag and seems only to have been sold in WHSmiths. But then again, I could be wrong. Pictures of the normal and travel size editions are again seen below...

So there you have it. Six slightly different covers for the same magazine, with (at least) one of the covers being available in two different versions. Your webmaster has (at the time of writing) all six. No wonder my credit card is in meltdown...

What follows is a list of magazines that contain Sophie pictures...unlike the Magazine Gallery pages, these are pictures that have not been taken exclusively for the mag, and will often be duplicated from one magazine to another. The majority of them feature Sophie pix taken by the paparazzi at parties or premieres. By default, some of the pictures contained will be exclusive - it all depends on the magazine editors as to which pictures they wish to publish. Some of the magazines were given away as newspaper supplements, and as such were only available for one day. In some cases, a picture of Sophie was also printed in the newspaper as well. Other magazines, such as "Tatler" and "Harpers & Queen" are published in both the UK and the US, and are identical apart from the use of UK/US prices on the cover respectively. The list is not complete but is still fairly comprehensive - I will continue to try and 'fill in the gaps' whenever possible. Some items are deliberately not listed - adverts plugging magazines using reprints of "old" Sophie covers are in the main not listed, nor are instances where Sophie adverts are reprinted as part of an article (you don't really need a hundred articles all containing the "Opium" photo!). Where known, such items that are listed are identified as such. Also note, that 2004 saw the rise of the "travel size" mag, and for some of the fashion glossies from this year onwards (Elle, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan etc.), there are both large & small editions of these mags in existence. Again, post-2011 stuff can be found via the "2011" button. Apart from one or two exceptions, any mags that mention Sophie very,very, briefly, and have no photo, are not listed.

The following list is a run through of magazines (and a handful of newspapers) that have featured important or exclusive Sophie features and pictures. In most cases, the photos were taken exclusively for the mags concerned. Some are major fashion shoots or interviews, others are fashion features complete with photos that are believed to have been taken exclusively for the article. There are a couple of known omissions, where I have the pictures, but not the issue details. These will be included when possible.
The list does not include mags where Sophie appeared on the cover - these are listed elsewhere on the site and have been omitted for space reasons. Also, there are a handful of other interesting mags that have also been mentioned elsewhere on the site, such as "American Photo" and "Russian Vogue", and are not included here. The list does not include every magazine appearance - many mags will use 'old' pictures for features that have been bought from photo agencies, and have a tendency to resurface again and again. A reasonably in depth list of these can be found separately on the "Pic-ography" pages.
In other words, if you see any of these in your local charity shop, have a quick look. Some of these pictures have been scanned and are on the net, some have been reprinted elsewhere (often in inferior form), but for others, there will be pictures you have never seen before.

Music Videos

Like many other models, Sophie has appeared in the odd music video. Some are officially available, some are not. Again, the list below tells you everything you need to know about all of them - but if Sophie has been in any others, well, forgive the webmaster - after all, every time I watch MTV nowadays, they don't actually SHOW music videos any longer...

Duran Duran - Electric Barbarella

The background:
Most of Sophie's music videos have been accompanied by some sort of problem or story. Her first ever music video was no exception, as it's quite possible you may have seen it much later than when it was originally released.
The video for "Electric Barbarella" was filmed in early 1997. It was the first single from the Duran Duran album "Medazzaland". However, the band had fallen out of favour, and found themselves without a record deal in their home country, the UK. As a result of this, the album and single were not released in the UK, and this video was rarely, if ever, screened on UK TV at the time. The single was released as an enhanced CD in the USA, featuring the video as the enhanced feature.
It wasn't until the release of a Greatest Hits album in 1998, that the single and video got a second bite of the cherry. The single was issued in the UK in 1999, and the video finally got shown on TV. A Greatest Hits video, and subsequent reissue on DVD, means you now have more opportunities to get hold of this video than some of Sophie's others, despite it's, at one time, rarity status.

[Obviously better picture quality on VHS/DVD than on CD Rom. In the Far East, it was also released on Video-CD, with less tracks than the video, which could be played on a DVD player or possibly a CD Rom. However, the quality on Video-CDs is poorer than a Video or DVD. CD + DVD release is a 2005 re-issue of the original CD version - the video is included on the DVD disc. The Dual Disc release is from the same year - the CD tracks are on one side, and the DVD featuring the video on the flip. I understand there is a 2011 CD+DVD reissue that differs from the one listed above in minor ways, but that the Sophie part of the package remains intact.]

U2 - Last Night On Earth

The background:
Not too much to say about this one. Sophie's second video saw her play the star of the show, unlike the Duran video, and gain the credibility of starring in the same video as William Boroughs. However, it generally seems to be a rather forgotten song and video - being the third single release from U2's 1997 album "Pop", automatically means it received less coverage than the first single from the album, "Discotheque".

The DVD was a 4 track disc, one track of which was a 'preview' for this release. Small clips from the "Last Night On Earth" were included, although the most you could see of Sophie was a leg and a flash of blond hair, which may even have been a body double!]

Elton John - Something About The Way You Look Tonight

The background:
It’s not widely acknowledged that Sophie features in the video for the biggest selling single in the world ever, partly as it’s on a technicality. But “Something About The Way You Look Tonight” by Elton John does have this claim to fame.
The video featured Sophie alongside a host of other models including Kate Moss and was filmed during the summer of 1997. It was due to be released as the first single from Elton’s “The Big Picture” album, and promotional copies of the single were issued prior to a planned release in September. The picture to the left features the photo used on the promotional sleeve. However, the death of one of Elton’s friends, Princess Diana, changed the course of history. Elton sang a re-written version of his 1973 song “Candle In The Wind” at her funeral (with suitably altered lyrics), and public demand decreed it worthy of an ‘official’ release. The decision was taken to issue a Double A side single consisting of “Something…” and “Candle In The Wind 1997”, the latter a studio recording as opposed to the funeral performance. Promotional releases of the originally planned version of “Something…” were recalled, whilst a handful of singles that were on their to record shops for commercial sale were also pulled. The single eventually appeared in a sombre Elton-less sleeve, although some European countries did issue “Something…” as a single in the promotional sleeve but without “Candle…” on the release. Unsurprisingly, the Diana tribute caught the public imagination and propelled the single to the top of the charts worldwide, even though it was actually the second track on the CD and Cassette Singles.
Elton did receive some flak for including “Something…” on the single at all, as it was claimed he was using the publicity to plug the new album, but the idea was to provide an alternative for radio and TV to play when it came to doing chart rundowns and the like, as no video was shot for “Candle…”. Some TV shows opted to produce their own video for the song, but others went with Elton’s plan and broadcast “Something…” where required. Nonetheless, it remains one of Elton’s more obscure videos - even more bizarrely, the 1998 Japanese reissue of "The Big Picture" features an edited version of the video on the enhanced section of the CD, which fades out before Sophie even makes it on screen! All of Elton’s various Video and DVD collections have neglected to include the song.

Don't quote me, but a single track promo VHS copy is believed to exist, this may be the only format on which it is available. All of Sophie's others videos are also believed to exist as similar one track promos.

Primal Scream - Swastika Eyes

The background:
After filming three music videos during her first year of modelling, it wasn’t until 1999 that Sophie filmed another clip, this time for Primal Scream. The band, whose origins were from the Indie scene in Scotland, were fast becoming tabloid friendly, helped in part by their association with the social scene – singer Bobby Gillespie was friends with Kate Moss, and she had appeared in their “Kowalski” clip in 1997.
“Swastika Eyes” was the first single to be lifted from their “Exterminator” LP. A remixed version of the song by The Chemical Brothers was chosen as the single version, as opposed to the slightly darker version of the song that the band would choose to play on stage. Both versions appeared on the album. The title caused controversy, and in some countries it was retitled “War Pigs”, although the lyrics, with a constant cry of ‘Swastika Eyes’ throughout remained unchanged!
The video saw the band appear as soldiers who run through fields to get to the front row of a catwalk show taking place outdoors in what looks like a battlefield. One by one, models come out of a tent to the delight of the band but the twist is that the models take it in turns to degrade and show their contempt for the band. The final scene belongs to Sophie – who emerges from the tent with gun in hand, and proceeds to kill off the entire band!
Despite the fact that the video is actually quite tame (there is no fake blood after the carnage!), MTV in the UK freaked out, and refused to show the whole video, fading the clip out before Sophie appeared on screen. It was even banned from being shown after the watershed. Other countries weren’t so concerned, and at the same time that MTV UK was banning the video, MTV in Germany were showing it uncut. It was rather strange that even though Sophie was the star of the clip, most people in the UK hadn’t actually seen her part. For all I know, it may still never have been shown uncut on MTV in the UK!
Even buying an official version of the clip, for a while, was awkward. It was for a couple of years only available on a Japanese Primal Scream ‘Best-Of’ CD as part of a bonus DVD given with initial copies, and these are now worth about £30-50. Keen Scream fans will notice the sleeve of the Japanese CD is very slightly different to the UK release of the same record, where the DVD was replaced with a bonus remix CD instead. The video has since been given a wider audience by being included as one of several "bonus" video tracks on a Primal Screem Live DVD, which interestingly omits some of the band's bigger hits, including the aforementioned Kate Moss clip!

Sophie has made the odd movie appearance over the years but despite (almost) being the starring role in several films, she has never fully embraced the thespian world. Still, she has appeared in several films (although she was completely cut from "The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion") and put in a classic comic turn in "King Of Bollywood". As ever in the modern world, all of her films are available to buy and the list below gives a bit more information. "Little Fugitive" seems to have been her swansong, and the world of cooking now beckons. Whilst there may have been many exhibitions that featured Sophie pictures over the years, the following are ones that I have personally seen or have information about. All were held in London (unless otherwise stated) and all relevant info is included. As you can see, some were held in conjunction with books "of the event". Given Sophie's "withdrawal" from the modelling scene, it seems unlikely that too many future exhibitions will include our heroine, so who knows - maybe this is a complete list?

The John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award 1997
The National Portrait Gallery

Held between 17th October 1997 and 11th January 1998, this exhibition featured a series of 60 photos from a submission of hundreds more that were entered into the John Kobal Award. Sophie’s picture was one of the photos that was shot by Adrian Wilson for her ‘centrefold’ appearance in the “Cheap Date” magazine in 1997. The photo can be found in the “Cheap Date” book mentioned elsewhere on this site. Sophie was interviewed about the exhibition just before it was opened – track down the 16th October 1997 issue of “Hot Tickets”, a magazine given free on that date only with the “Evening Standard” newspaper, to read the full transcript, where she describes the photo as one of her favourites. The mag features the photo, plus a small pic of Sophie taken at a Breast Cancer Awareness photocall in London the previous June. The photo above was taken roughly around the same time.

Mario Testino Portraits

Launched in London, and held at the NPG from 1st February to 4th June 2002, this exhibition was certainly high profile. There are related TV shows, magazines and books (all detailed elsewhere on this site). The photo in this exhibition is the January 2002 cover of "Vogue". There was a fee to attend this exhibition so related memorabilia includes tickets with the exhibition name and date printed on them. A free guide to the exhibition was given out to all entrants, showing you what photos were where in the hall. The exhibition has since reached Edinburgh's Dean Gallery with a run from 16th April until 15th June 2003.

Held in the latter part of 2002, running from 10th October to 23rd December, this exhibition was a multi media event. The Sophie photograph in the main hall was a picture of her in a bath covered in spaghetti, with fellow model Devon Aoki by her side. A small reprint is shown above. There were also two 'continuous-play' videos running - one featuring music videos directed by La Chapelle and the other, a Channel 5 documentary about him and this exhibition. This documentary featured both this and one other still of Sophie, the latter picture featuring commentary by Isabella Blow, the woman who 'discovered' Sophie. A free guide to the exhibition made no mention of Sophie. Again, it was a ticket entry show - each ticket gave access to both this and one other exhibition upstairs, and both are printed on the ticket. Running from November 1st 2002 to 23rd February 2003, this exhibition was held in conjunction with the book of the same name. All pictures were taken from the book, Sophie's picture is the one that is also in the "American Photo" mag mentioned elsewhere on this site. Another ticketed affair (although only available to buy on the day, unlike the Testino one), the ticket contained no show information, just date and time of entry.

A free exhibition, shown in a far smaller part of the NPG than the Testino show. Held in connection with another 'Blondes' exhibition at the Getty Images Gallery, this one featured the picture of Sophie taken for the February 2003 "Vogue" cover. Held from 3rd March to 6th July 2003.

Another freebie, this exhibition features a lovely picture of Sophie that once appeared in Loaded's "Britain's Most Wanted" supplement from October 2001 - a list of the UK's most attractive women, allowing Sophie to nestle next to soap stars and Page 3 Girls! Held between 30th April and 5th June 2003, the exhibition displayed pictures currently owned by Getty Images and the Hulton Archive. Sophie's picture, taken in New York in 2000, is from the Getty collection.

A photocopied handout was available at the exhibition, giving information about obtaining pictures shown at the gallery (you could buy a glossy version of the picture for £125+) as well as a complete list, with pictures, of all the images on display. The pictures in the handout are printouts from the Getty and Hulton websites, hence the appearance of a copyright across Sophie's photo. The handout says that anybody can search their websites, but in fact, only the Hulton website was searchable at the time - you needed to work for a company to gain access to Sophie's picture in the Getty site. Getty's site has since been changed so that anybody can now view this and other Sophie pictures (albeit with a copyright logo across the centre of each photo) - their site is at http://editorial.gettyimages.com/ - although I think the option to buy the exhibition picture is no longer available. The picture can be viewed under image number 1301651 on this site - a "top half" only shot is shown above.

People & Portraits
The Proud Gallery (Central Gallery)

Another freebie, featuring photographs by fellow Supermodel Helena Christensen. Held at the Charing Cross branch of the Proud Gallery between 5th September and 4th October 2003, the main part of the exhibition took place on the ground floor of the gallery. The exhibition was sponsored by Levi's And Elle, and Helena took photos of 12 celebrities wearing Levi's Jeans which formed the body of the ground floor display. All the images were later auctioned off for The Terence Higgins Trust. However, in addition to this, over 40 more of Helena's pictures were displayed downstairs which were not 'themed' like the ground floor - one of Sophie's pictures that Helena took for the August 2003 issue of "Elle" was displayed. All images on display were signed by Helena and the downstairs prints were also auctioned off - 25 of the Sophie pictures were sold for approximately £500+ each. The September 27th showing of ITV show "Entertainment Now" featured an interview with Helena, and video footage shot inside the gallery, including a clip of the Sophie display.

Held at a Covent Garden gallery between June 10th and August 22nd 2004, this collection of Richard Young photographs was displayed to coincide with the release of his book “Shooting Stars”, more of which is discussed elsewhere in this part of the site. Unusually, the exhibition and the book did not necessarily use the same set of pictures – the photo of Sophie displayed at this exhibition was a photo of her and Jodie Kidd backstage at the Matthew Williamson fashion show in London in February 2001 and differs from the Sophie picture in Young’s book.

Another Getty Images exhibtion, this time from 2010, this exhibition featured "more than 50 celebrities...snapped doing what makes them happy". The exhibtion ran from the 20th to the 30th of January, and Sophie's picture was also printed in the "Sunday Times Magazine" on 4th October 2009. A limited number of prints of each photo (25 per shot) were also made available at the time, some signed by the photographer, Lorraine Goddard.

The Pirelli Calendar

As you can see from elsewhere on this website, there are several books devoted to the Pirelli Calendar. Here's why...

The Pirelli Calendar is a notoriously collectable item. Issued each year to employees and not for sale to the general public, the calendar invariably focuses on women in various states of undress. Sophie has shot two sets of pictures for the calendar, in 1998 (for 1999) and 2002 (for 2003).
The calendars come individually numbered, and are originally issued in cardboard packaging. For the 1999 calendar, the late Herb Ritts photographed 12 models, one for each month. The theme of the calendar was 'Women Through The Ages', with each model's photograph looking as though it had been taken at a certain year in history. Sophie was for the year 1900. Whilst the original calendar is obviously rare, the pictures included are not. "GQ" magazine issued a free supplement in late 1998 with re-prints of the pictures, including Sophie's and the 14th November 2004 issue of "Style" magazine reprinted the photo again to mark the release of a Pirelli Calendar book.
The 2003 calendar is something else. It is double sided (ie. each month appears twice) and also features additional pages with pictures only. There are no less than six pictures of Sophie, at least four of which are believed never to have been officially published elsewhere. Aside from this one, the other five were included in a montage on one page. "Esquire" magazine issued a free supplement in late 2002 with selected pictures from the calendar - only the picture shown here was included Sophie-wise. French mag "VSD" also issued their own 'version' of the calendar as a freebie around the same time. In addition, issue number 45 of the Italian mag "Sette" (2002) featured one of the other pictures. Interestingly, the picture included in this magazine hadn't been cropped, unlike the 'original' in the actual calendar, although the difference between the two is very slight. The 2003 calendar was also the first one to also feature male models.

Although the title of the book may give the impression that all the pictures contain some kind of linked theme or that they were photographed at the same time, this is not the case – Sophie’s picture dates from 1997. The picture was shown on Channel 5’s “Portrait Of A Photographer” special, and a small reprint can be seen above.]

Tackling My Demons

[published on 1st October 2004, this book is the autobiography of ex-footballer Stan Collymore. Collymore talks through his life story, although his ‘alleged’ relationship with Sophie is covered in merely a sentence or two. A picture of the pair together from early 1998 is included.

Collymore claims they "had a fling" after the 1998 Brit Awards, the picture above shows Sophie a month or so after the alleged incident at the "Man In The Iron Mask" premiere. The book was serialised in the British newspaper “Daily Mirror”, and after being alerted to the allegations, Sophie took out a legal case against the paper. She won, and the paper reported that it had paid her damages and legal costs on January 17th 2005.]

The art form has its roots in India, which explains why Sophie has been spotted at least once wearing a bindi on her forehead, as she has lived in India and of course filmed her own Bollywood movie there in recent years. This book features a pic of Soph at the 1997 Lloyds Bank British Fashion Awards, the photo above was also taken at the same event. Two different covers exist for this book, although the UK and US copies are not necessarily housed in different sleeves.]

Rena Sindi is a party organiser in the US, and this book is a photographic collection of some of her parties, plus recipes for some of the food that was served at each! Sophie features in the "Toga" party section. The picture surfaced in several magazines such as "Elle" (December 2002 issue) around the time of the publication of the book in late 2002, but some of these pictures were cropped at the bottom or at the side. However, the original print was NOT used in this book, as part of the top of the original picture has been cropped instead...London freebie mag "ES" has since reprinted the picture in one of its issues dated 21st March 2003, and hasn't been cropped at all.]

It was he who, whilst at Yves Saint Laurent, was responsible for Sophie’s world famous ‘Opium’ perfume advert. Unsurprisingly, it is that well known image which gets a double page spread in this book – it’s a shame that one of the other rarely seen photos from the same campaign couldn’t have been used as well. The book comes in a hardback slipcase, as has a retail price of £65, so it may be cheaper to track down a second hand fashion mag if you want that picture rather than buying this! Indeed, so collectable are they, that this book is cheaper than buying any of the back issues! Sophie has been included a couple of times, and this book is a "Best Of" of the first 40 issues. One Sophie picture from Visionaire 31 (February 2000) is included in this book. For the definitive article, the book also included a postcard insert with the book's coverstar, Angela Lindvall on one side.]

Sophie features in the section for Jeremy Scott, complete with a very rare picture of her on the catwalk. However, the book was produced in conjunction with "ID" magazine, and this picture was originally printed in the March 2002 issue of the mag - it may be worth trying to track that down instead as the original book carries a £20 price-tag, although the reissue sells for about £6-7.]

[Published on 30th June 2004. Richard Young is a paparazzi photographer based in London who has built up an un-paparazzi like reputation over the years. He is respected by celebrities and is not the sort to get into fights unlike other ‘paps’. This book, released in conjunction with an exhibition of his work in London, contains a selection of pictures over 30 years from numerous events. Sophie gets a look in – the book contains a picture of her at the Vogue/Laureus fashion party at the Monte Carlo Sports Club in 2000. The picture from the book is owned by Rex Features – they have a website full of Sophie thumbnails at http://www.rexfeatures.com/cgi-bin/r2show0?k=sophie+dahl. You can’t click on the thumbnails unless you have a password (and you need to be part of a company to ask for one) but it might still be worth a look.]

[Published at the end of May 2005, this book was compiled with the help of Elton John, with some of the proceeds from the sale of this hardback going to his AIDS Foundation charity. A series of famous women posed nude but for a pair of shoes (hence the title), although most chose to hide their modesty rather than actually flash the flesh!

There is one picture of Sophie in the book, unlike her friend Laura Bailey who got two. The picture is technically exclusive, but had already been published several months before when Soph appeared on the cover of “Style” magazine. Original copies come shrinkwrapped, with a ‘4 Inches’ sticker attached to the front.]

[published on either 10th July 1999, or in early 2000 (confusion reigns about this), this is effectively a 'Best-Of' book compiling highlights from the first six issues of this magazine, information about which I have discussed in more detail elsewhere on this site. There is also 'new' material included as well. Sophie is one of the pin up girls who appear throughout the book - her picture is from the same photo session that spawned her appearance in the first issue of the mag in 1997. The photographer was Adrian Wilson, and three pictures from this session at one point could be found at http://www.adrianwilson.com/portfolio1/index.html - however, I think they have now disappeared. Signing sessions for the book saw Sophie accompanied by the illustrator, Annie Morris, who rather than signing the book, drew an extra illustration instead. Illustrations include two hand written notes between 'Pierre' & 'The Man', the two main characters in the book - Sophie was responsible for Pierre's illustration! German version entirely translated into German, including the hand written notes and includes other typographical changes, mostly on the inside of the dust cover. French version similarly altered from UK edition. In addition to all these, Waterstones stores in the UK offered "pre-signed" copies for sale, which came with a suitably stickered cover. Copies were sold at the Cheltenham Literature Festival when Sophie appeared on 14th October, although may have gone on sale at start of Festival on 5th October. Proof copy is a softback "promo" copy, with "Not For Resale" on cover, and several pages where "Copy to follow" is listed in lieu of details regarding items such as "A Note On The Author". Rear cover gives detail of (at the time) forthcoming promotional tie-ins, promo blurb like "it should not be quoted without comparison to the finally revised text", and recommended retail price. There are certain differences between proof and retail copies as regards the actual text, but too awkward to fully detail! Of note, is that the proof copy refers to "The Present" as sub headings as times, the retail copy does not. Retail copy in "posher" sleeve, chapter 14 in proof copy does not exist in retail copy, and instead forms end of chapter 13. 1st edition limited to 550 signed and numbered copies WORLDWIDE, housed inside special slipcase, but given that 22nd October release date relates to UK issue, all 550 copies believed to have been sold in UK only, especially as a sticker on the back claims it is exclusive to Waterstones stores. 1st editions all sold shrinkwrapped, and the Waterstones sticker is outside the shrinkwrap, as is an ISBN barcode sticker. US edition not released until 2008, only a month before UK paperback release, in totally different cover. Advance copies exist, showing slightly different ISBN number on rear, with "Not For Sale" printed on front, and "On Sale April 2008" on spine. [Released on 30th September 2005, this “ten-year-retrospective” photobook by Amanda de Cadenet about her life features an unpublished picture of Sophie, who also wrote the words in the book with fashion designer Marc Jacobs, referred to as “A Conversation with Marc Jacobs and Sophie Dahl”. Amanda, who started life as a teenage model before becoming a UK TV presenter and then a photographer in the US, has been friends with Sophie for several years – hence the collaboration on the book. Amanda had previously photographed Sophie in 2003 for a French magazine. An article about Amanda, complete with a re-print of the Sophie picture from the book, is in the November 2005 edition of "Tatler", which also features a rarely-seen photo of the pair together at the "Playstation" party in 2002.]
